The idea for this work was to take something mundane like a nice, neat bunch of flowers and turn it into something almost entirely different. Just a concept or impression only slightly related to the original source material. It’s a fun process with unexpected results!

We were doing a workshop on pattern and colour inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt. Of course nobody can emulate his genius in a half day workshop, but I did try to incorporate the Japanese influences and rich colours in this abstract work.

When I started art classes the first items we ever attempted were pots. Lots of pots. To learn learn about shapes, shading, colour, blending and all the foundational skills needed to launch yourself into the world of art. We all got really sick of pots. However, there’s something lovely about them so I’ve re-visited pots for this simple but elegant work.

A dear friend from university days and I go on an annual roadtrip and last year we drove to Alice Springs. It was wonderful to experience the real outback and I was inspired by the colours and epic scale of our great land to create this pallette knife work.
